Plantlife has received a grant from the Celebrate It Fund of the National Lottery to celebrate the national flowers of Commonwealth countries during this summer’s Commonwealth Games in Scotland.
The children of Madderty Primary School in Perthshire have already made their Commonwealth quilt of 25 national plants. This quilt is currently on display at the Macphail Centre in Ullapool and will be there for the Queen’s Baton Relay on the 9th of July. Some of the children in the art classes of Ullapool High School are also hoping to make some Commonwealth Squares in time for the 9th of July Baton Relay.
We are running free workshops in Strathearn Library (7-8 on Wednesday 18th of June) and at the Hidden Gardens in Glasgow (11-1 on Friday the 20th of June) to celebrate the Commonwealth Flowers and as part of the Scottish Refugee Week celebrations. We also plan to hold a couple of Commonwealth Flowers sewing and information workshops at the Royal Scottish Geographical Society in September or October this year. Please contact Seona Anderson (firstname.lastname@example.org) if you would like more information about any of these events.
The Commonwealth Flowers will be exhibited alongside the Patchwork Meadow exhibition in Ullapool (Macphail Centre June 5th until July 10th), at the Hidden Gardens Glasgow (July 23rd until August 4th) and at the Fair Maid’s House Perth (Royal Scottish Georgraphical Society) from the end of August until the end of October 2014.
